Reasons why Snail is ranked One of the Most Deadly Animals on Earth


Snail is one of slowest animal on earth. It can travel 1kilometer in 9days. It has tentacles which aid its vision and also has 14,000 set of tiny teeth which are in numerous row, they do not chew their food they just scrap it. Snails when properly prepared is a delicious meal and can also be used as appetizer.

Today, snail farming is one of the most lucrative business in most societies. It's a very productive business because most snail species are hermaphrodites, having male and female reproductive organ which allows them to mate with other snails and both lay eggs.

Snails do not change their shell, the shell grows along with them. The mucus on garden snail is used to treat scars, wrinkles, acne on the skin.
Freshwater snail is one of the common species, they are known to be carrier of this parasite. This parasitic disease is ranked to be next after malaria. This freshwater snails carries a parasites that gives a disease called schistosomiasis. It's been recorded to have over 200,000 deaths per year.

This parasite develops and multiple in this freshwater snail, it uses the body of this freshwater snail as host to grow. This parasite are released from infected freshwater snails into water and it penetrates the skin of people who are been exposed to the contaminated water. It spreads by contact.

The parasite that causes schistosomiasis grows into adult worms in few weeks and burrow the intestine and bladder. Freshwater snails migrate from one environment to another and hence increases the spread of the parasite.

This disease is common among children and anyone exposed to unclean water. The early symptoms include; fatigue, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, blood in urine, blood in stool. More severe complications include liver damage, kidney failure, infertility.

Also poorly cooked snails can result to illness because snails host different parasites.

Schistosomiasis can be prevented by zero exposure to contaminated water.
