THE GOVERNOR IS THE LEADER, WHEN HE COMMANDS I OBEY
- DR JAKE OTU ENYIA
By Dominic Kidzu Reporting.
When in the end the Governor and leader of the party, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade asked him to withdraw from the race and endorse his own political son, Victor Abang, Jake bowed in obeisance, went home, cried a few drops of tears and did exactly as he was told. He blessed the one they call Mature and sent him on his way to Abuja to represent the good people of Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, bringing to a close the fratricidal war that had raged among sundry brothers and a single sister for three unforgettable days.
The contest for the national assembly ticket was an epic battle of gargantuan ramifications, especially so because the gladiators were almost evenly matched in terms of political resume, access to the Governor and war chest. Not a pretty penny was spared in the runnup to the diadem as the strong men tried to outdo, outpay and outwit one another. In poll position were Dr Jake Otu Enyia, Honourable Edward Ogon, Madam Tina Agbor, Sir Victor Abang, the very intellectual Honourable Cletus Obun and a few other pretenders to the throne of Peregrino, one of who laboured hard to steal it but failed. Were the contest to be allowed to go ahead on an even keel, Jake Enyia would certainly have nicked it before sunrise. But contemporary politics has its ways sha.....while the word CONSENSUS seems strangely to have gained frightening traction in the APC.
In the press release Jake signed after the debacle, he declared that " I in obedience, loyalty and admiration of the wisdom of our Governor and commitment to the party wholeheartedly accept and key into the choice of Sir Victor Abang (Mature) as our candidate for Ikom/Boki federal constituency". He added that since he was not chosen by the earthly authority who is the Governor, he believed that even in heaven he was not chosen for the position at this time, recalling that at other occasions the same Governor had chosen him over others. "As a Christian of the Roman Catholic extraction and Knight of the ancient order of St. John's International, I have a firm belief that God is the giver of power and position "
This is the spirit of sportsmanship
